Program Information
Established under the Department of English, the Faculty of Liberal Arts, Thammasat University, the English Language Studies (ELS) international program offers both M.A and Ph.D degrees, encompassing a wide range of the English language disciplines ranging from Applied Linguistics, Intercultural Communication, to Professional English. This highly flexible program allows students to choose their area of interests and conduct research based on one of these three tracks.

Admission 

  • eTypes of Admission
  1. M.A. Program(for candidates with a Bachelor’s degree). Students can choose between Thesis and Non-thesis plans.
  2. Ph.D. Program(for candidates with a Master’s degree).

 

Admission Requirements

  • For MA. Program:  a Bachelor’s degree in any field with the minimum GPA of 2.50

 

  • For Ph.D. Program: a Master’s degree in any field with the minimum GPA of 3.25

 

  • English Proficiency Scores: one of the following English scores (score reports are valid for two years):
    TOEFL (Internet-based) no less than 79
    TOEFL ITP (Institutional Testing Program) no less than 550
    IELTS no less than 6.5
    TU-GET (paper-based) no less than 550
    TU-GET (Computer-based) no less than 79

(except those who completed a degree program in which English is used as medium of instruction within two years prior to the application date).

  5. A valid English test score report
  6. A copy of bank transfer of 1,000 baht for non-refundable application fee (See details in the application form)

  8. Two letters of recommendation (for Ph.D. candidates only)

Descriptions of exam

  • Candidates are asked to write ONE essay of about 600-800 on a topic related to Applied Linguistics or Intercultural Communication.
  • No dictionaries are allowed.

 

Notes: The deadline for submission of the English test score for M.A. applicants: TBA

     M.A. candidates who fail to submit the score will be disqualified even if they passed the written and interview exams.

ELS Admission FAQs

01. Can I apply for the program without the required English proficiency score?

Yes. You may be considered for “admission with conditions.” If you are a successful applicant and enroll in classes, you are required to submit the English proficiency score by the starting date of the following semester to be able to continue your study.

02. Do you have a format for recommendation letter?

No. The format is up to your referee.

03. Do you have a template for research proposal?

No, but we do have the guidelines for your research proposal. Please check them at “Guidelines for Writing a Research Proposal (1,000 words).”

04. Can I submit the slip from the bank application as evidence for the application fee payment?

Yes. Please write your name on the slip and keep a copy for your own reference.

05. Do you provide scholarships for students?

We do have financial support for research: (1) Thammasat University Doctoral Research Scholarship for Ph.D. students (monthly stipend and one-time research presentation fund). The scholarship application and conditions are subject to Thammasat University, and (2) Research Publication and Presentation Fundings for Ph.D. students and for M.A. students per academic year.

06. What is the approximate tuition fee?

As for the academic year 2025, the approximate round-up tuition and other fees for the entire period of the study are:

M.A.    
Thai citizen 190,000 baht
International students 250,000 baht
*After Year 2, the expenses are subject to the credits enrolled for thesis.

Ph.D.  
Thai citizen 520,000 baht
International students 620,000 baht
*After Year 3, the expenses are subject to the credits enrolled for thesis.

07. Are the classes on weekdays or weekends?

The classes are on weekends. However, summer classes taught by visiting professors are intensive course, which are scheduled on weekdays and completed within 2-3 weeks. Students are expected to attend the summer courses.

08. Can I attend the class online?

The class format is onsite. However, with certain conditions, you may attend the class online. Please contact us for further information.

09. Do you provide dormitory services for students?

Yes, with affordable expenses. Thammasat University’s Tha Prachan Campus offers on-campus housing, “TU Dorm Tha Prachan,” which is approximately 11 km from Tha Prachan Campus.
